Central Bendigo Flood Solutions

Central Bendigo Flood Solutions

The City of Greater Bendigo has completed an in-depth technical review and community discussion from June 2021 to November 2021. The key objective of the project was guide decisions about infrastructure development to reduce potential impacts of flooding within Central Bendigo.

Technical analysis was undertaken by specialist engineers, Water Modelling Solutions, to include:

  • updating current flood data using new methodologies to reflect industry learning and new guidelines
  • assessing potential options to reduce the future risk of flooding

The project harnessed local knowledge to help shape priorities to be considered by Council, who will make final decisions. Knowing there’s a wealth of wisdom, knowledge and skill in the community, residents, property owners, businesses and organisations were invited to participate, make comments and suggest ideas. Make A Change Australia is on board to assist with engagement on key issues raised within the study.

After extensive community consultation that included surveys both in hard-copy and online, an online mapping portal that allowed users to add comments and ideas. Workshops in person and online to gather information, comments, and later in the study to gather support/disagreement with the proposed options.

During the period of consultation 80 mitigation options and comments were collated, some duplicated and general comments, therefore a total of 35 options were found to be appropiate for preliminary modelling. With the preliminary modelling 6 options were put forward for detailed modelling based on their general efficiency to mitigate flooding within Central Bendigo. These 6 options were also discussed with the community and are presented in the Final Report

A sensitivity analysis for climate change was undertaken and the results can be seen in the Final Report and Appendix B
