Code of conduct for dog owners
Dog droppings
When you take your dog for a walk, you have a legal responsibility to ensure that no dog droppings are left behind.
Dog parks and off-leash areas
Off-leash or free roam activities are restricted to dog off-leash parks and specific areas and/or times on some reserves. Please read the signs carefully when entering such reserves.
When exercising your dog in an off-leash area, dog owners must:
- Remain within voice or hand control distance of your dog at all times and ensure the dog is within sight
- Carry a bag or similar device to remove and dispose of your dogs waste. Failure to do so may result in fines being issued.
- Not allow your dog off leash if it doesn’t respond to your recall
- Stop your dog being a nuisance or aggressive towards other dogs, people or wildlife
- Not allow your dog to interfere with the enjoyment of other people or dogs using the area. Not all people are comfortable in the presence of dogs.
- Not allow your dog to run on turf cricket pitches
- Ensure your dog is microchipped, registered and vaccinated
- Carry a leash at all times and use as required
Put your dog on a leash in an on-lead park or if it is within 10 metres of any:
- Public children's play area
- Public BBQ or outdoor eating area
- Business premises
- Organised event
Bitches in season should not use off-leash areas while other dogs are in the area.
Owners are encouraged to walk their dogs off leash away from paths.
Note: Dog owners are legally responsible for their dogs and any injuries caused by them.
