Budget invests in community-focused projects

Media release

The City of Greater Bendigo’s 2023/2024 Budget is investing in community-focused projects to meet the diverse needs of a growing city and region.

Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said the Budget included a wide range of projects for the benefit of the community.

“In the next financial year, we are delighted to provide a dedicated grants program for up to three years for Neighbourhood Houses,” Cr Metcalf said.

“The Bendigo, Eaglehawk, Heathcote, Kangaroo Flat, Long Gully and Marong Neighbourhood Houses play a critical role as central hubs for local communities.

“They bring people together to connect, learn and contribute through social, educational, recreational and support activities, using a unique community development approach.

“This funding will enable an exciting new partnership with Neighbourhood Houses that will strengthen programs in the future. This will greatly benefit residents through a focus on improving digital literacy, providing social connections and support, and raising awareness about healthy lifestyles.

“We know that the collective impact can improve equity and achieve positive outcomes for local communities.

The Budget includes:

  • Establish a secure annual grants program over the next three years to support Neighbourhood Houses in Eaglehawk, Heathcote, Kangaroo Flat, Long Gully, Marong, and Bendigo
  • Subject to external funding, stage one of a new Marong kindergarten as part of a multi-year investment in a community hub
  • A Changing Places accessible facility on High Street, Heathcote
  • Funding to continue to address non-compliant disabled car parking, pedestrian crossings, and footpaths
