The City of Greater Bendigo is preparing to naturalise and improve a section of Long Gully Creek between Happy Valley Road and Creeth Street and is inviting members of the community to find out more and have their say on the draft concept plan.
City of Greater Bendigo Climate Change and Environment Manager Michelle Wyatt said this is an exciting project for Long Gully that will bring nature back to the site and improve the community’s experience of the area.
“The aim of the Long Gully Creek project is to naturalise this section of the creek between Happy Valley Road and Creeth Street by returning water back to the landscape by creating a chain of ponds and revegetating the area,” Ms Wyatt said.
“The works will include drainage works to bring stormwater flows from low rainfall events above the ground, earthworks to create a new waterway featuring ponds and channels to naturalise the creek and replanting of the area with indigenous plants.
“The draft concept plans have been developed taking into account flood risks, maintenance needs, Dja Dja Wurrung cultural values and how we imagine the community could make better use of the area for recreation and to connect to nature.
“We are really keen to engage with community to find out what they like about the plan, if they have any concerns or think we have missed anything or if they have any other feedback.”
The Long Gully project is part of the Yaram Yaram Bayikina Bendigo Creek Reawakening partnership between the City of Greater Bendigo, DJAARA (Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation), and the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) to restore sections of the Bendigo Creek and its tributaries.
Yaram Yaram Bayikina is a $7M project, funded by the Australian Government’s Local Environmental Projects Program.
Residents can view the plans and have their say on the Long Gully project on the City’s Let’s Talk Greater Bendigo community engagement website or by attending the following information sessions:
- Community drop-in session outside of Long Gully Neighbourhood Centre, Derwent Drive on Saturday August 29 from 10am to 12pm
- Drop-in session at Galkangu Bendigo GovHub, Lyttleton Terrace on Thursday September 10 from 10am to 12pm
