The City of Greater Bendigo will undertake a $400,000 project to strengthen and repair the Thistle Street Bridge over Bendigo Creek to ensure this important structure can continue to serve the community for many years to come.
The project will require a full closure of the bridge while the works are underway with detours put in place.
City of Greater Bendigo Acting Manager Engineering Nathan Sartori said the work is required as the bridge’s arch has developed a sag in the centre and the works will strengthen it in place and prevent any further settlement.
“The project will involve removal of the road pavement and soil to expose the top of the arch, a new arch will be built on top of the old arch and the foundations will be rebuilt,” Mr Sartori said.
“After the road is re-built there will be no evidence of the repairs however the project will require a full closure of the bridge for approximately two months. Pedestrian access will still be available via the separate footbridge throughout the works.
“Work is scheduled to commence on Monday May 20 for an expected completion in August 2024.
“The City understands the works will cause some inconvenience. However, we trust residents will understand the importance of the project and why the works are necessary.”
