Heritage Strategy and Action Plan 2024–2028

Strategy

It does this through actions related to advocacy, knowledge sharing and promotion. The Strategy also provides guidance so the City and the community can protect and connect with our heritage.

Background

Greater Bendigo has a rich history of Aboriginal culture, gold mining, global migration and distinctive box iron-bark forest. The City has many heritage assets which provide opportunities for storytelling. These assets help us to understand our complex relationships with the world around us, and our place within it.

External population, economic and social issues can influence heritage management. These issues effect not only the City, but private owners and custodians too. A range of 35 actions aim to respond to the challenges currently facing heritage. The strategy also highlights the great heritage work already being undertaken.

This is the first strategy of this kind for the City. With a four-year timeframe, the strategy is centered towards setting up strong foundations. This includes:

  • reviewing heritage information
  • bringing heritage registers are up-to-date
  • identifying heritage to be studied
  • sharing the range of Bendigo heritage
  • providing information about the heritage protection system
  • highlighting what the City currently does to manage and promote heritage
