Housing advocacy
The City of Greater Bendigo does not own or build social or affordable housing. However, it is strongly advocating for the following sites to be developed for the purpose of delivering more housing stock to market, ideally a combination of type (e.g. one, two and three-plus bedroom homes) as well as a mix of stock (standard housing, as well as social and affordable housing).
Sites being advocated for
Former Athletes’ Village site – Retreat Road, Flora Hill
- 7.37ha site, land owned by La Trobe University, within 4km of the Bendigo city centre
- Considerable early investigation work has been completed for this site, including significant investment in supporting background studies. It is already located in a residential zone
- Close to public transport, La Trobe University, shops and off-road cycling paths
Chum Street, Golden Square
- 14ha vacant Crown land site, within 2km of Bendigo city centre
- Accommodate approx. 1,200 townhouses/apartments/units
- Close to public transport, schools, shops
Former Golden Square primary school site
- 1.2ha site, Crown land, within 2km of the Bendigo city centre
- Residential Growth Zone
- Would deliver between 45-50 units, plus reuse of the former school building which could be additional accommodation or support services/community uses
- Victorian Government has funded all urban design and planning scheme amendment documentation
- Close to existing services
