Improving City Centre streetscapes by repairing tree root damage, upgrading paths and kerbs, and supporting healthier street trees
About the project
The City of Greater Bendigo is delivering the City Centre Streetscape Renewal project as part of its annual renewal program.
The project sees the repair of streetscapes affected by tree roots, improves conditions for healthy tree growth and enhances the look and safety of City Centre streets.
Who is involved and what works are proposed?
The City designs each renewal site in collaboration with officers from Public Space Design, Engineering, Arboriculture and Urban Forest teams. The work is delivered by the City’s Engineering and Works teams.
Works are tailored to each location, depending on site conditions, and the level of damage to nearby infrastructure.
Where tree roots are damaging infrastructure, canopy trees may be replaced. Upgrades may include new kerbs, footpaths and garden beds, using the City Centre's standard materials palette.
These improvements will help create safer, more attractive and more resilient streetscapes.
Completed works
The first stage of the project was completed in May 2026 on the north-east side of Williamson Street, between Myers Street and Mollison Street.
Works at this location included:
- New tree pits
- New concrete kerb
- Upgraded footpath
- Replacement of four London plane trees (Platanus × acerifolia) with Japanese elm trees (Zelkova serrata)
The new tree species were selected to provide long-term benefits to the streetscape and its visual character.

Further project stages will be delivered progressively across the City Centre.
