At McCrae Street

Shared cyclist and pedestrian crossing

  • A new signalised pedestrian and cyclist crossing will be constructed across McCrae Street by the Department of Transport and Planning to compliment the project and provide access to the Bendigo Creek Trail
  • Right turns from Mundy Street onto McCrae Street will be banned and left turns from Mundy Street into McCrae Street will be retained. Right hand turns will be banned due to the closeness of the new pedestrian operated lights

Between McCrae Street and Hargreaves Street

Designated cycling and pedestrian zones

  • Remove existing trees in front of Law Courts and in median (10).
  • Relocate kerb to roadside of existing parking bays.
  • Widen footpath to incorporate adjacent cycling area (3m wide cycling path and 3.8m wide footpath).
  • Relocate angle parking bays on Law Courts side (this will be a net gain of four parking bays on the northeast side).
  • Remove existing median.
  • Plant 5 new trees in front of Law Courts in tree cells.
  • Create kerb out stands on southwest side to protect existing trees (loss of 6 parking bays on southwest side.

At Hargreaves Street/Mundy Street Roundabout

Shared pedestrian and cyclist crossing

  • Construct a raised shared use crossing across Hargreaves Street at the roundabout. The type of crossing to be constructed is called a Raised Safety Platform. It is similar to a zebra crossing but can legally be used by cyclists. Once completed, both pedestrians and cyclists will have right of way over vehicles at these crossings
  • Addition of one new street tree

Between Hargreaves Street and Hopetoun Street

Designated cycling and pedestrian zones

  • Remove existing trees on northeast side and in median (7).
  • Plant 5 new trees in tree cells on northeast side.
  • Relocate kerb to roadside of existing parking bays.
  • Widen footpath to incorporate adjacent cycling area (3m wide cycling path and 3.3m wide footpath area).
  • Retain angled parking bays (this will result in a loss of two parking bays on the northeast side).
  • Remove existing median.
  • Upgrade existing non-compliant accessible parking bays to meet required standard.
  • Create kerb out stands on southwest side to protect existing trees (loss of 3 trees on the southwest side.

At Mundy Street, Hopetoun Street and Lyttleton Terrace Roundabout

Shared crossings

  • Construction of raised shared-use pedestrian/cyclist crossings across Mundy Street, Hopetoun Street and Lyttleton Terrace existing roundabout. The type of crossings to be constructed are called a Raised Safety Platform. They are similar to a zebra crossing but can legally be used by cyclists. Once completed, both pedestrians and cyclists will have right of way over vehicles at these crossings.  
  • Construction of a 3 metre wide path that links the crossings together

Between Lyttleton Terrace and Myers Street (YMCA side)

Designated cycling and pedestrian zones

  • Remove trees on the YMCA side of the road (resulting in a loss of six trees)
  • Remove trees in the centre of the road (resulting in a loss of six small trees)
  • Plant 13 new trees (a net gain of one tree in this section)
  • Change the road to be angled parking on both sides with no parking down the centre (resulting in a net loss of six car parking bays in this block)
  • Upgrade existing non-compliant accessible parking bays to meet required standards
  • Relocate kerb on YMCA side to be closer to the road
  • Widen footpath to incorporate adjacent cycling area (3 metre wide cycling area, 2.5 metre wide footpath area)

At Myers Street

Shared cyclist and pedestrian crossing

  • New pedestrian operated signals (traffic lights) for both cyclists and pedestrians to cross Myers Street will be installed across Myers Street by the City of Greater Bendigo. The City of Greater Bendigo and the Department of Transport and Planning are actively seeking funding to deliver the pedestrian operated traffic lights at the Mundy/Myers Street intersection. Once funding is received, these works will be undertaken following the completion of the protected shared user path
  • No other changes to existing traffic movements will be undertaken

Between Myers Street and Bramble Street (Salvation Army side)

Designated cycling and pedestrian zones

  • Retain existing trees
  • Relocate kerb to road-side of existing trees (existing traffic lane width to be retained)
  • Change parking from angled to parallel (resulting in a net loss of four parking bays in this section)
  • Realign and widen traffic lanes to 4.3 metre width
  • Construct new 3 metre wide cycling path between trees and new kerb
  • Reconstruct existing 4.3 metre wide footpath between fence line and trees
  • Planting of two new trees (resulting in a net gain of two trees in this section)

Between Bramble Street and Railway Line

Pathway to be shared by cyclists and pedestrians

  • Retain existing trees
  • Re-linemark existing angled parking (resulting in a net gain of five parking bays in this section)
  • Reconstruct existing footpath to 3 metre wide to allow pathway to be shared by pedestrians and cyclists
  • Plant two new trees (a net gain of two new trees)

At Railway Crossing

Cyclists and Pedestrians will be separated

  • Pedestrians will continue to use the existing rail crossing infrastructure (crib crossing)
  • A new 3 metre wide cyclist pathway will be constructed within the existing road crossing with the crossing to continue to be controlled by existing rail crossing boom gates and lights

From Railway Line to Abbott Street

Pathway to be shared by cyclists and pedestrians

  • Construct new kerb at road edge and formalise this area as a no parking zone
  • Construct new 3 metre wide shared path for use by cyclists and pedestrians behind the kerb
  • On road bike lanes provided in 50km/h speed limit zone for road cyclists
  • Plant four new trees (a net gain of four trees)
  • Construct a new raised shared use crossing across Abbott Street. The type of crossing to be constructed is called a Raised Safety Platform. It is similar to a zebra crossing but can legally be used by cyclists. Once completed, pedestrians and cyclists will have right of way over vehicles at the crossing

From Abbott Street to Havlin Street West

Pathway to be shared by cyclists and pedestrians

  • Retain existing trees
  • Relocate kerb to road-side of existing trees (retain existing traffic lane width)
  • Line-mark existing parallel parking (there will be no change to parking bay numbers)
  • Reconstruct existing pathway as a 3 metre wide shared user path for cyclists and pedestrians between trees and new kerb
  • On road bike lanes to be retained (50km/h speed limit)

At Havlin Street West to Back Creek Trail

Crossing to be shared by cyclists and pedestrians

  • Construct a raised shared use crossing across Havlin St West.  The type of crossing to be constructed is called a Raised Safety Platform. It is similar to a zebra crossing but can be legally used by cyclists. Once completed, pedestrians and cyclists will have right of way at the crossing
  • Construct new 3 metre shared user path linking to Back Creek Trail ramp
