What’s happening

In 2025 Solstice Energy announced that it would be decommissioning the compressed natural gas network in Heathcote and Marong. Affected residents were required to decide if they would convert some or all their appliances to electric or LPG gas. The customer then needed to let Solstice Energy know of their decision.

The City of Greater Bendigo supported customers by offering weekly drop-in sessions and In-Home Energy Snapshots to discuss their individual situations and provide advice.

Key dates

Marong:

  • Appliance conversion dates: 16th March – 2nd August 2026
  • Gas network decommissioning: After 2nd August 2026

Heathcote:

  • Appliance conversion dates: 30th March – 16th August 2026
  • Gas network decommissioning: After 16th August 2026

Feasibility Study

The City of Greater Bendigo commissioned a study comparing the costs and benefits of partially or fully electrifying a home in Marong compared with switching to LPG bottles. 

Findings:

  • The yearly cost of running a 4-bedroom home on LPG is at least 2.5 times more than running a partially or fully electric home
  • Due to lower running costs of electric appliances, the upfront cost of partially electrifying a four-bedroom home can be recovered in about 3 – 4 years.
  • The cost of partially electrifying a two-bedroom home can be re-couped in around 9 years.
  • All cost estimates and findings are based on data available in November 2025 and may change over time.
