Local law 2

Local law

Local law number 2 regulates and controls activities associated with keeping of animals, birds and poultry in Greater Bendigo. It aims to ensure the welfare of the animals and protect the general amenity of the municipality.

This law applies to poultry and other birds, dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, horses, sheep, cattle, goats, pigs, camels or like species.

The law explains the responsibilities of owners and those in charge of animals, including:

  • Ensuring that animals are not a nuisance (noise, smell, damage to land, or polluting a waterway)
  • Managing feed scraps and excrement to prevent odour, pollution or damage to the area
  • Keeping properties occupied by animals vermin-free and storing animal feed in vermin-proof buildings
  • Protecting and restraining poultry and animals with suitable fencing and suitable housing

It specifies limits to numbers of animals you can keep (by type) and explains the requirements of different zones (rural, industrial, business, residential).
